General Description
CHATS, the Miami Cochlear Implant, Auditory and Tactile Skills Curriculum is a comprehensive manual for training deaf and hard of hearing children in the use of sensory aids for speech perception and production. It has been written by a team of speech-language pathologists, audiologists, teachers of the hearing impaired, and early childhood development specialists to be a hands-on guide for communication training.

In addition to providing practical information about cochlear implants, hearing aids and tactile vocoders, this guide includes a hierarchy of goals and objectives that provide a framework for teaching a variety of receptive and expressive skills. Each objective is accompanied by one or more sample activities to assist the user in developing the targeted skills. Over one hundred activities are described in an easy to follow format.

The curriculum is written for children from birth through adolescence but can be adapted for adults. An evaluation chapter provides clinicians with a review of assessment tools for hearing impaired children, and research data showing the effectiveness of this approach for sensory aid training.

To receive more information on the CHATS curriculum, go to our Brochures page or fill out the Information Request Form and IHS will send you a CHATS Info Package.
